8 Travel Tips For Healthy, Beautiful Skin On the Road
Taking your skincare regimen on the road can be a huge challenge. But especially when you’re traveling, your skin deserves some love! Don’t forget your skincare routine just because you’re on the road. 😉
Here are 8 of my best tips and tricks for taking your skincare with you wherever you go.
My first advice… if you're traveling by plane, whatever you do, don’t let TSA confiscate your favorite products by forgetting to pack small enough containers!
Seriously, nothing is worse than having your self-care items swiped by grumpy airport workers. (I’ve cried over the expensive skincare I’ve lost to them!)
Plane cabins use recycled air that can dehydrate your skin. The humidity on a plane is about 20% or less - that’s half or less what our skin is used to.
So your skin will try and compensate for that by increasing oil production. Making acne worse for all skin types.
But you can prevent a flight’s skin-damaging effects with a few smart moves before and after you board.
Here’s what to do:
1. Drink water, not alcohol, on your flight. Or if you like to have an alcoholic drink on board, make sure you have at least one glass of water for every drink. I like to go sip for sip between the drink and water, and then add an extra glass of water.
2. Apply a moisturizer before you board. It will protect your skin, add hydration, and prevent water loss from your skin. Look for something with hyaluronic acid in it, since there is so little water in the air on a plane.
3. Airplane windows provide no UV protection. And you’re much closer to the sun at 40,000 feet! So apply sunscreen too, before you board. We recommend at least an SPF30. And don’t forget your lips! This favorite of mine will help to moisturize as well as offer UV protection.
4. If your skin dries out during flight time, it will want to produce extra oil to counteract the dryness. This can aggravate any acne you have, or even create a new blemish mid-flight. And let’s face it, travel is stressful. Packing, getting to the airport on time, the lines, getting through security, to mask or not to mask, all create stress.
Stress increases cortisol in your body, the stress hormone. This can also contribute to new blemishes, fast. And it can aggravate conditions like eczema, psoriasis, or rosacea.
We recommend the Mineral Air Renewal Skincare System to hydrate, balance, renew and brighten your skin in 30 seconds on the go. It also gives you a moment of “skin zen” - time to breathe and relax as you get settled. And it will hydrate your skin right through your makeup. It's that good!
5. Leaning your head against the headrest or window can contaminate your skin and cause a breakout. Keeping some gentle cleansing wipes with you, especially on a long flight, can give you a chance to refresh and wipe away any excess oil or bacteria you may have picked up. {don’t forget PITS cool deodorant wipes]
6. Avoid puffiness by getting up every hour or so and taking a walk up and down the aisle. You’ll feel better - and look better - when you get off the plane.
7. Your cuticles aren’t immune to travel dryness. We love Carter + Jane’s PickFix to keep our cuticles soft, and to soothe any irritations from anything, like a bug bite or scrape. It’s a tiny bottle of comfort you can take anywhere.
8. Don’t give away your skincare to TSA. I always travel with a travel kit so I know I have everything I need in all the right sizes. Especially today, I’m trying to pack in smaller bags and carry less with me. So a travel kit really helps. I can toss in a skincare kit, sunscreen, my Mineral Air makeup kit, the Ellis Faas Kate Mur set, and some wipes.
I’ve got everything I need from casual to dressy looks. And it’s easy and lightweight enough to carry in my carry-on. And most of the time I keep the Mineral Air Skin Renewal Mist and PickFix right in my pocket or purse.
Travel kits are essential - and so perfect - for having exactly what you need, and nothing you don’t.
Everything in our Travel Collection is TSA friendly and can travel in your carry-on.
To your beautiful skin!
