2 Simple Steps to Clean, Hydrated Skin? Yes, Please!!!

When we first laid eyes on Ducalm’s innovative products, we got pretty excited. We loved their unique delivery system - a stick cleanser and moisturizer! We immediately saw the benefits for our “on-the-go” customers. And over half our customers are on the go, according to our Skin Quiz results. If these worked the way we hoped they would, they would be a great benefit to the Indie Beauty Market tribe. In 2 simple steps, we’d have clean and hydrated skin. Yes!

But first we needed to see if they would fit the Indie Beauty Market standards - will they work? Is there anything harmful in them? Are they a joy to use?

So we spoke with Danielle Pitts, founder and creator (along with her step-dad, Dr. Michael Stone) of these beautiful, hard-working, non-toxic products.

Dani’s Story

We loved Dani’s story. She wanted “simplicity, fewer products, and efficacy. I like to go makeup free so I like to have balanced, even skin. I also happen to be an avid multi-studio per day/week fitness addict. I wanted the best multitasking product that I could carry with me at all times and use on the go.”

Dani was searching for skincare that would accommodate her many sensitivities. She also had reactive combination skin - T-zone oil, dryer cheeks, and larger pores.

She got together with Dr. Stone, and together they created a product line that had everything she wanted. Of course it had to be all natural and non-reactive with her skin. It also had to have a great feel, high performance, and be easy to use and easy to carry with her to the gym. And Dani’s own standards meant that her products are non-GMO, cruelty free, and vegan.

Physician Formulated

Dr. Stone used his biochemistry background to help her narrow down the list of ingredients that would work, and still be non-reactive. Then they looked at synergy - which ingredients would boost each other’s performance, and require less of each ingredient.

Dr. Stone says “... in some instances there is synergy between substances that permits the use of fewer and smaller numbers and amounts of each compound. This has been our successful approach to skin care.”

You Need to Sweat

As an athlete, Dani is well aware of the body’s need to sweat. And exercise is important to our skin health, as well as our overall health. We produce almost 1 liter of sweat a day. Increased circulation and sweating helps to rid our bodies of toxins. It strengthens our immune systems so we get fewer colds and other illnesses. And it gives us healthy looking skin.

Sweating helps us regulate body temperature, and also opens and unclogs pores - a built-in zit zapper! Sweating also benefits us by boosting our feel-good endorphin levels and uplifting our mood.

But washing that sweat off carries its own risks. You want to make sure you’re not using a harsh cleanser, because that will strip your skin of its protective barrier. Without that barrier, you’re vulnerable to infections, cellular damage, and oil imbalance.

Ducalm’s Cleanser and Barrier moisturizer are formulated to protect and rebuild your skin’s moisture barrier. They calm your skin and enhance recovery.

5 Key Ingredients

Dani and Dr. Stone came up with 5 Key Ingredients you’ll find in Ducalm’s products:

Jojoba Seed Oil is an oil that promotes skin health. Jojoba oil doesn’t clog pores. It’s rich in iodine, which fights harmful bacteria growth that leads to breakouts. Jojoba mimics the skin’s pH and is closest to our natural sebum. The antioxidants in jojoba soothe fine lines and wrinkles, and naturally slow down other signs of aging.

Hyaluronic Acid is naturally occurring in the human body. It is a powerful humectant that keeps skin plump and hydrated. Hyaluronic Acid can help retain your skin’s moisture content and counteract issues like dryness and fine lines. If your skin gets too dry, it can crack, allowing bacteria in, including the bacteria that causes acne. We think this has a lot to do with the adult acne we are seeing.

Sunflower Oil is rich in linoleic acid and vitamins A, C, and E, which repair damaged tissues. It supports skin barrier function by decreasing water loss and reducing inflammation. Antioxidant properties of vitamin E neutralize free radicals, stopping them from damaging healthy cells.

Rosehip Seed Oil is loaded with essential fatty acids and antioxidant vitamins like A and C. It is believed to even out skin, brighten skin tone, hydrate, calm inflammation, and fight signs of pigmentation and aging.

Marshmallow Root Extract is anti-inflammatory and helps soothe irritated skin. It contains a high percentage of healing properties. It has intensive hydrating, softening and balancing effects on the skin.

These 5 ingredients create the multi-tasking in Ducalm’s Multitastic! Products. They lock moisture in, and pollutants out. Your skin stays hydrated and protected all day long.

We ordered some samples to give the brand a chance to impress us as much IRL as it did on paper. Would it pass our IRL test?

After trying the cleanser, my own skin felt really clean but not “squeaky clean” - squeaky clean is bad. Squeaky clean means your moisture barrier has been washed away, and it can take up to 14 hours for your body to replace it. Yikes!

I loved the ease of application with both the cleanser and the barrier. The one thing I hate about washing my face is getting water all over the place. I never splash off - I always remove cleansers with  a warm wet washcloth or dampened 4x4 squares. I can’t stand water running all the way to my elbows, and getting all over the counter too. (I'm so picky!)

With the cleanser, I just had to glide it over my skin (and it glides so nicely!) then massage with dampened hands. It formed into a nice, milky lather that was easy to remove.

I patted my skin dry with a clean towel (always pat, never rub!) then applied the Barrier moisturizer. It too glided over my skin easily. And fast! I took a minute to massage it into my face and neck, and I was ready to go!

Dan tried them too, and loved the ease of use. He’s constantly telling me how “guys like things to be quick. I’ll wash my face and then use maybe one other product. That’s it!” Ducalm’s simple 2 step routine  was great for him. His skin felt hydrated all day long. He thought they would be great in our men’s collection too!

So then we gave them to some friends. Breelie says, “I’m always on the go so the Ducalm Barrier is a life saver. I can put it on in under a minute and run out the door! I love how it just glides on my skin with no resistance. It’s such a smooth product. It helps keep me fresh faced and ready to take on the day!”

Kayla added the Multitastic! Barrier to her regular routine and felt it added just the right amount of moisture to her skin. It felt calm and softened.

We have a lot of requests for a simple daily regimen. A full 23% of people who have taken our Skin Quiz say they can only tolerate 1-3 products in their routine. We feel that Ducalm has earned their spot in the Indie Beauty Market line-up. It works - we saw clean, happy, hydrated skin. It does no harm - no toxic, harsh or harmful ingredients. At just $19 for the Cleanser and $25 for the Barrier moisturizer, it fits almost everyone’s budget.

And what a joy to use! Quick and easy, and FUN!

We hope you’ll love it as much as we do!
